Kommetjie is a typical, magical West Coast holiday village, complete with convenience store, hairdresser, library, post office, pub and surf shop. Local activities include the beach, beach horse riding, crayfishing by boat, surfing and boarding, kayaking, bird watching, hiking, whale watching and shopping.
Shops and all necessary facilities are close at hand – and there are several excellent restaurants, including the local Fisherman’s, renowned for its scrumptious fresh seafood and Rioja, for really exceptional cuisine, just up the road at Solole Game Reserve.
Naturally, the beach is the primary focus of this sleepy, seaside village. It’s tailor-made for relaxed and happy holidays. Spend days just lapping up the sunshine whilst watching the surfers, kite-surfers and body-boarders, or watch the fishing boats come and go at Die Kom, walk along the coast to picturesque Slangkop lighthouse and visit the crayfish factory beyond. Quaint and characterful, Kommetjie was laid out a century ago amongst the coastal milkwoods surrounding Die Kom (a large protected natural rocky sea basin) and today the village has extended northwards towards magnificent Longbeach and the wreck of the Kakapo.
Kommetjie is only 10 minutes from the bustle of Longbeach Mall, which boasts Woolworth’s (+27(0)21-7841460), Pick n’ Pay (+27(0)21-7854420), Sun Valley Pharmacy (+27(0)21-7852155), movies, internet café and a host of other shops and restaurants. It’s 45 minutes from Cape Town and the Waterfront and 60 minutes from Cape Town International Airport.
